enjoy!
Ladies lose their power when there are in relationship?
Previously, Zhao Wei's 'Mulan' mainly focuses on the female general's love and career whereas her subsequent show, '14 blades' is a male dominated action show with Zhao Wei playing a passionate Qiao Hua.
"I do have a few action scenes, wearing a leather hat and sleeveless jacket, showing character." However, from the trailer, it is her white top and head scarf, caressing in the wind that is more prominent. "That look is when I loved someone. Originally, I know a bit of martial arts and is very hearty, but filming towards the end, I become more feminine with a white head scarf. Director even invented a scene where I had to lie against the pillar with a feminine touch… I told him 'Director, did u forget that I was somewhat a martial arts person and as you filmed, you made me transformed into a defenseless person!'' What's more extreme was when the male lead was fighting, she had to fall with nervousness. 'I said I should be strong enough to resist the fall? I know martial arts and had fought at the start… Director said oh yes yes but soon forget about it."
"Will ladies really forget how to fight after being in a relationship?" -- "Many a time, it is like this… One who isn't very good in martial arts will be slowly forgotten as one who know."
"So do you still believe in love?" "Love is something that every woman needs to face. I met an expert yesterday who wrote a guide book on BGR. I was really envious and asked 'Are u able to solve every BGR problems? Does that mean you tend to live better?' The expert replied 'This is 2 different things, write is write…" Zhao Wei used a question to answer her question.
You are sure to have seen before the similar expression on Zhao Wei, probably on some female office lady/ doctor/ artist, but of cause, Zhao Wei's expression is much prettier, but their 'Can't be helped', 'Let it be' have no difference. It's because love guide books alone can't provide a relying shoulder on Mulan, this female heroine.
COSMO: How do you feel having acted as a couple with Donnie Yen? Zhao Wei: You can feel his maliness acting alongside with him and thereafter making you easier to enter the filming situation. Some partners cant made you feel their power and yet you have to act as though u are defenseless beside them. Not every man can make you feel the I-can-rely-on-you feeling.
COSMO: What qualities are required in a man to make you think that 'He is a man'? Zhao Wei: Responsibility. Like Donnie who is very caring for his family, he always mention about them when we chat.
Pain can be a relish
Filming takes whole day long. Zhao Wei needs to be on the chair for a very long time, surrounded by professionals who are preparing to paint her nails, do her hair, get clothes for her to choose from -- the makeover is a job to her and is no different from on-screen where she is instructor by the director's 'reel!', 'a louder slap!'. Zhao Wei in big woolen clothes and winter boots who is an undergrad of the film and Zhao Wei being a celebrity is often confusing. On asking her to compare Zhang Yi Mou and Chen Kai Ge, she said 'Zhang Yi Mou' and this isn't what a celebrity on training to have a glib tongue should answer. Take others who are as 'trouble-prone' as her would tend to be more careful with words.
"I say what people ask me, I can definitely do such mean things." She frowned and made a self-ridicule look in front of the mirror. "I say the truth when being asked by no matter friends or other people. To me, fabricating a piece of sentiment and story is even more difficult than to speak the truth." Yes, no matter how crude or embarrassing or the darker and pessimistic side of her, she tells everything. So if she says is a pessimist in general, don't feel strange. Zhao Wei said she needs to persuade herself to not to ask if what she is doing is correct or worth it when she is already halfway through it. Actually, she thinks more than what people expect. No one is born an optimist. Garfield still needs to wake up, Chibi Maruko Chan still needs to submit her summer holiday homework, transformer is still leaking oil.
"Im very fortunate to be in this acting industry" Having a bit of bitter in work is of help to acting. People who were ditched, who were messed in marriage, who experienced the worst of situations tend to be more sensitive. Actors who have more experience in life will having more complex acting and able to tucked the audience with the same sentiments compared to those who experienced little in life.
COSMO: Will you find someone to complain to when in distress? Zhao Wei: Not many people worth me complaining to them, it's a process which I grow out of. I realized helping people to analyze is like giving a shot of anesthetic which can bring about systematic effect, but the root of the problem can only be solved by my own.
Who says literature art is tragical?
They say Zhao Wei has been working realistically as a female star these few years, at least better at self protection -- wearing branded gowns and putting on glamorous make ups on the red carpet, more willing to take up big productions of better stability and quality. From 'Red Cliff' , 'Painted Skin', 'Mulan' to '14 Blades'. Even she herself feel that she become more practical these 2 years, not like the old her, always challenging small capital literature art films. Now that she has realized, it's more appropriate to choose big productions.
Used 10 years of time, from adorable little swallow of 'My Fair Princess' to the spit personality female masters to a beauty alongside a hero of '14 Blades', Zhao Wei's 'change for practicality' is a very long process. Having studied 3 years film in Beiijng Academy of Film and graduating soon with her first piece of work, what will she choose to film? A literature art? "Nowadays people think hat literature art is tragical, if you really want to film one that the audience like really require much skill… En." She often follows a En(Yes) after her sentences that seems like a self-confirmation.
"After the age of 30, I started to have a more stable understanding. I don't quite chase fashion statements, I prefer some antique stuff -- like those which will be useful even after years have passed. Not necessarily the newest, not say those that you like today and dislike tomorrow. This is actually a lazy idea, it will help you to filter out those that are proven not useful."
When asked going back to the past, which is the best time to be an ancient. Her eyes glowed, seemingly more excited in comparative to on other topics. "Take me to the time which is most open and most atrocious! En, should be the Tang dynasty where the ladies wear low cut dresses." "Why the Tang dynasty?" "Since we are returning to the past, lets pick the most bombastic one!"
COSMO: If you want to praise yourself, what will it be? Zhao Wei: Im particularly good in admitting wrong (Laughs), it's like yawning, especially when my mum educates me, I will think of quickly admit my wrong to end it.
COSMO: What makes you curious? Zhao Wei: Im cultivating a curiosity for others, to diligently understand people's mind. My job is to create, understand people and to bring across their sentiments. Previously, I did it on from my own perspective, but if I want to entice my acting, I would still need to come from other people's perspective, en, yes.
